High fat diets favoured in the Western world are thought to have increased the number of intestine cancers. People are encouraged to eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, as this appears to reduce the risk.
The main option for treating this illness is surgery. But when the cancer is well-established, chemotherapy is used. Only when the cancer has spread beyond the wall of the colon, it becomes harder to treat. However, estimates suggest that nine out of 10 colon cancers detected early can be successfully treated.
